How to Get Rid of Dust in Your Home

Deshacerse del polvo dañino

Dust in your home is more than a minor nuisance: Inhaling dust can bring on allergy and asthma symptoms, making sufferers uncomfortable. Learn how to get rid of dust in your house so everyone can breathe easier.

Remember dusting basics

Try these tips when dusting your home:

  • Use the right cleaning tools. Avoid feather dusters and dry rags, which spread dust particles instead of capturing them.
  • Use a damp cloth or a microfiber cloth instead. Microfiber cloths have an electrostatic charge that attracts dust.
  • Dust from top to bottom. This makes it easier to collect the loose dust that floats down.

Change or update filters

Regularly changing filters can have a positive effect on air quality.

  • Change the furnace filter. Performing this task every few months will help combat dust as well as reduce risk of furnace damage. Try using pleated or electrostatic filters which are more effective at trapping dust " instead of fiberglass filters.
  • Install high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) air filters. To help improve your overall indoor air quality, install a HEPA air purifier or add a HEPA filter to your vacuum. These filters effectively capture microscopic particles.

Focus on fabrics

Follow these tips to tackle dust where it accumulates most.

  • Use pull-down shades rather than blinds or fabric curtains.
  • Change and wash your bedding weekly.
  • Eliminate upholstery dust by choosing leather, wood or vinyl-covered furniture.
  • Replace carpet with wood and tile flooring, or choose low-pile carpet and washable rugs.
  • Store unused clothes and other textiles in boxes or bags, rather than out in the open.
  • Vacuum at least once a week.
  • Shake out and beat large rugs and cushions with a broom or tennis racket outside.
