How Raising Money for Fire Victims Helped the Entire Community
Zack had been living in San Francisco's Mission district for over a year when he noticed a cloud of smoke one day while riding his bike home. As he witnessed the fire, he couldn't help but think about all of the building's residents and how every room represented someone's entire life.
At the time of the fire, he had no idea who any of the residents of the building were, but came to learn that most in the community were low-income Latino residents. The burned down building was a special place for those residents and a safe community for all.
Knowing that most of the residents in the building would be displaced without resources, Zack decided to start a fundraiser for the Mission community. His initial goal was to raise $2,000, but soon exceeded that amount in one day. Instead of just donating the money to the community, he worked with Mission Economic Development Agency to turn the donations into $180K in order to help the Latino community stay in the Mission.
Zack's simple act of kindness not only provided basic needs for the families, but also sparked an interest in others to donate and help the community in order to preserve the culture of the neighborhood. What started out as a really simple fundraiser turned into a movement that not only saved the residents, but a community.
