State Farm Companies Foundation Scholarship Program

The State Farm Companies Foundation Scholarship Program recognizes academically talented legal dependents of eligible State Farm® associates (employee, agent, or retiree*).

100 scholarships are awarded each spring during the senior year of high school. The scholarship award is $5,000 per year up to four years of college (undergraduate study) or until baccalaureate degree requirements are completed, whichever occurs first.

Students attending junior colleges are also eligible as long as the student is pursuing a baccalaureate degree and is enrolled as a full-time undergraduate.

The annual competition is conducted through National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

Winners will be notified by May of the student’s senior year. Only those who advance in the competition will be notified and receive materials from National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

*A retiree is an individual who retired from the Company in active status and is eligible for retiree benefits other than retirement/401k plans.

Who is Eligible?

  • Children or legal dependents of a State Farm associate (employee, agent, or retiree), including step-children and foster children.
  • U.S. high school junior (11th grade/third year) students who will be completing or leaving high school and entering college in the fall of 2021.

Children of agent team members are not eligible to participate in this scholarship program, nor the grandchildren of employees, agents, or retirees.

How Do I Apply?

Step 1 - Submit an Entry Form by March 31, 2020

  • State Farm associate must be complete and submit the entry form by March 31, 2020. The website will close and will not accept entry form submissions after that date.
  • If more than one parent is a State Farm associate, each parent should submit a separate entry form. If a student advances in the competition, and one parent leaves State Farm, the student’s eligibility would continue based on the second parent’s entry submission and continuing employment.
  • Print the confirmation code at the top of the entry form. You will not receive an email confirmation.
  • The entry form can be completed prior to the student taking the PSAT/NMSQT test.

Step 2 - Student Takes the PSAT/NMSQT in the Fall of Junior Year

  • Students must take the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of their junior year, on the date their school chooses for the administration. Student must make test arrangements with their high school counselor at the beginning of the school year.
  • You do not need to submit PSAT exam scores. If the exam is taken in the fall of the student’s high school junior year, National Merit Scholarship Corporation is able to retrieve these test scores.

Contact National Merit Scholarship Corporation if:

  • Student is unable take the PSAT/NMSQT due to illness or extenuating circumstances and needs to request an alternate procedures.
  • Student graduates from high school early for information on when to apply.
  • Student is homeschooled or their school does not administer the PSAT/NMSQT exam.
  • Error was made on the entry form.

What Is the Advancement Process?

  • The PSAT/NMSQT scores are used initially to advance a student in the scholarship competition.
  • National Merit will contact the high school principals in December of the student's senior year, who will in turn notify students advancing in the competition. At this time, a small application is completed by the high school and the student (letter of recommendation, short essay, grades, and activities).
  • Only those entrants who advance in the competition will be notified and receive materials from National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
  • National Merit will select the 100 winners who are notified via postal mail, typically in May of their high school senior year.

How Are Winners Selected?

  • All phases of the competition, including the selection of winners and payment of scholarship stipends, are managed by National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
  • State Farm Companies Foundation is not involved in the evaluation or selection of winners.

What Is the Award Amount and Payment Process?

  • The scholarship stipend is $5,000 per year up to four years of college (undergraduate study) or until baccalaureate degree requirements are completed - whichever occurs first.
  • For prior year programs, scholarships ranged from $3,000 to $8,000 per year and will continue for the 2019 program recipients and prior year winners.
  • Stipend checks are distributed by National Merit Scholarship Corporation directly to the student’s college/university.
    • If the college/university is on a semester system, two stipend checks are sent per year in September and January each for 1/2 of the annual stipend amount. If the college/university is on a quarter system, three stipend checks are sent per year in September, December and March each for 1/3 of the annual stipend amount.
  • If college/university has not been selected, the student can accept the award and contact National Merit Scholarship Corporation once the college/university is determined.
  • Contact National Merit Scholarship Corporation if the student changes schools or takes a leave from college.
  • Per the IRS guidelines, scholarships and grants may be used towards tuition, books, fees, and other course-related expenses. Contact National Merit Scholarship Corporation for clarification on room and board.
